Van Conversion Diaries: Insolation (Day 1 & 2)

Van Life Diaries

#day 1

We finally started to get the material we ordered a few days ago so we decided to go for it and officially start the van build.

There was still other stuff to be ordered but we received the most important material, which was the insulation, that week and that way we could start to work on it.

We were looking for insulation, wondering which one we should use and after a lot of research we decided to go for armaflex. It is not the easiest material to work with, but it seems to be the most efficient and the one who can make us the most comfortable with the results.

We insulated some walls, however not a lot, because we needed a bit of practice. After some time we could manage it and the work flowed easier. On the first day we could just do 1/3 of the van but on the second one it went faster.

#day 2

We continued with the insulation, which was a pain in the ass, because there were a lot of tiny spaces we needed to cover with armaflex. However, when we needed big places to be covered, we did it quite fast as we already knew how it worked.

As the day was promising not to rain, we decided to start installing the roof vent. We needed to cut the roof of the van and we got some help with it. In general it was not that difficult to install it, however we needed a lot of patience.

We could insulate most of the roof besides a part in the front, because we need to wait for the solar panel and install all the cables before we can insulate.

We measured and cut the wood for the floor, which will support the ply wood. We will just do the floor when the rest of the insulation is mostly done, to be sure that we keep the floor clean and not full of armaflex and glue.

We also chose which color of the vinyl we will use for the floor. As the ceiling will probably be brighter we decided to get a darker vinyl (laminated) which is water proof, but not too dark, to avoid making the space look smaller.

We have already ordered the rest of the material (solar panel, battery, stove and some other things we need), and we gonna get them next week, so then we can go back to work on it.
